Scottish Care Leavers Covenant

To coincide with National Care Leavers Week 2015, CYCJ partnered with a number of youth justice stakeholders to unveil the Scottish Care Leavers Covenant. The covenant asks corporate parents (those public bodies who have new legal responsibilities to promote the rights and wellbeing of looked after children and care leavers into adulthood) and others to sign up to improve the lives and opportunities of young people leaving care.

Every young person needs support and guidance to make a successful transition from childhood to adulthood – young people with care experience often lack this support and guidance, which can have devastating consequences.

The Covenant is essentially an ambitious ‘Agenda for Change’ which we hope will transform the way care leavers are supported as they transition into adult lives across Scotland. It offers corporate parents a set of guiding principles and actions required to support the implementation of the Aftercare section of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014.

By signing up to the Scottish Care Leavers Covenant, you can demonstrate your commitment to transforming practice, culture and outcomes for all care leavers. Endorsing the Covenant and applying the framework will support, complement and enhance corporate parenting activity across all local authority and health board areas and transform both culture and proactive across all corporate parents.
