Dr Graham Connelly, Honorary Senior Research Fellow, will chair the Kilbrandon Children’s Research Webinar 2025 featuring three expert presentations on the theme of masculinities and working with boys and young men. Participants can contribute comments and questions to a panel discussion facilitated by Dr Gillian MacIntyre, Reader in Social Work.
Presentation: “Masculinities under pressure: marginalisation, misconceptions and mental health” by Nina Vaswani and Iain Corbett
Dr Nina Vaswani is Senior Research Fellow at the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice at the University of Strathclyde. Nina was principal investigator on the Men Minds Project co-produced with young men aged 16-24, aimed at better understanding marginalised young men’s mental health and reducing barriers to mental health help-seeking and participation in mental health research for young men.
Iain Corbett is Participaction, Policy and Engagement Advisor at the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice at the University of Strathclyde. Iain has been working in HM Prison & Young Offenders’ Institution Polmont to deliver “Activate,” a University of Glasgow certified introduction to community development, and he has designed and delivered workshops exploring masculinity with young men in conflict with the law in community and custodial settings.
Presentation: “The role of masculinity as a barrier to adolescent boys and young men’s help-seeking for mental health” by Ayesha Sheikh
Ayesha Sheikh is a Research Officer in the Evidence Based Practice Unit (EBPU) at Anna Freud and UCL, University College London. Her work has focused on studies related to young people’s mental health and wellbeing, including evaluation of school-based interventions and the needs of underrepresented groups.
Presentation: “Reframing Masculinity: Supporting Men and Boys in a Changing World” by Sophie King-Hill
Dr Sophie King-Hill is an Associate Professor at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on gender, sexual behaviours, youth voice and safeguarding, with an emphasis on reframing masculinity and addressing harmful sexual behaviours. Her book, “Reframing Masculinity for Young Men and Boys: We’re in This Together” (Palgrave Macmillan, due November 2025), explores the complex intersections of identity, mental health and societal expectations in the lives of boys and young men.
