Young People and Communities: Inside or Out?

University of Strathclyde, May 6, 5pm to 7.30pm

Young people are an integral part of our communities – but what do young people and communities really think about youth crime? Do communities have a positive relationship with young people, and can both groups work together to bring about change?

As part of the annual Engage with Strathclyde week, the Centre for Youth & Criminal Justice (CYCJ) will bring together young people, communities, academics, practitioners and the general public to consider these important questions at an engaging event entitled ‘Young people and communities: Inside or out?’.

The event is an opportunity for communities and young people to hear about the issues that are important to them and to consider how best to work together. It will draw on some fascinating findings from a recent survey conducted by CYCJ, in which over 230 communities and more than 400 young people offered their views on youth crime.

Participants from the Moving On Scotland project will also be on hand to share their experiences of youth justice services, and how they are using this experience to help minimise offending behaviour in their communities. Moving On Scotland is a partnership service delivered by Action for Children and Barnardo’s, that helps young people aged 16 to 21 to improve their lives and develop goals and aspirations for the future.

This event will also incorporate a panel discussion on the role and responsibilities of communities in relation to preventing youth crime, featuring input from academics, community organisations and industry professionals. Examples will also be given of successful partnerships between communities and young people, and best practice examples from intergenerational projects will also be shared.

Everyone is invited to come along and hear these real-life accounts from young people and community representatives. There will also be an opportunity for people to share their own opinions and join in the debate.
