Alternatives to Young Offender Institutions for children under 18

To fulfil Scotland’s aims and duties under the UNCRC through The Promise Plan, steps have been taken to reduce the number of children under 18 being detained in a YOI prior to a legislative change as part of the Children’s Care and Justice Bill, and the Bail and Release Bill.

There are several examples of good practice and alternatives to a Young Offenders Institution to offer courtss. These are laid out in Fiona Dyer’s paper Alternatives to Young Offender Institutions for children under 18, published in June 2022.
