Children (Care and Justice) (Scotland) Act 2024 – Briefing Paper 1

The sections of the Children (Care and Justice) (Scotland) Act 2024 that will end the usage of Young Offenders Institutions (YOIs) for children in Scotland who have been remanded, committed or sentenced by the court will be commenced as soon as possible and no later than the week beginning 2 September 2024. This briefing paper, the first of a series from the CYCJ on the Act, helps to explain the specific provisions of the Act that will enable this change, the rationale for these changes, the preparations being made to support implementation, and the practical steps that will be taken when these sections come into effect are outlined. The aim is to enhance the awareness and understanding of the organisations and practitioners responsible for implementing these provisions.
