Info Sheet 121 – Transition Guidance – Secure Care to Young Offender Institutions

Where it has been decided that a child under the age of 18 requires to be deprived of their liberty and has been remanded or sentenced, the child can only be placed in secure care. There is no legal route for a child to be placed in a Young Offenders Institution (YOI) even if the child is imminently due to turn 18. The child would need to be placed in secure care and then transition to a YOI. CYCJ has published an Information Sheet giving guidance on how the transition between secure care and a YOI should occur.
