People with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are disproportionally represented within the criminal justice system, and the care-experienced community. In addition, they face many challenges, as FASD is difficult to diagnose or understand – despite it being most common known cause of neuro-developmental disability and birth defects in the western world. It is thought that 1 in 20 people in Scotland could have FASD.
In this Info Sheet for CYCJ, Aliy Brown and Barbara Ogden (FASD Awareness Hub Scotland) give an overview of the features and symptoms of FASD to be aware of, and the types of support youth justice practitioners can give to young people with FASD who are in the justice system.
