As Deputy Director, Ranald leads the Practice Development and Participation Teams. The role involves strategic engagement with all key partners involved in supporting children in conflict with the law, ensuring that the rights of children are respected and promoted, with a focus on meaningful involvement of, and influence by, young people. With a strong emphasis on workforce support and development, drawing on current research evidence and practice wisdom, Ranald ensures that the work of the CYCJ is responsive to the needs of practitioners, always with an eye on achieving the best outcomes for our children and young people.

Before joining the CYCJ in 2024, Ranald held a number of roles across Criminal Justice and Children’ Services Social Work over 25 years in practice. In his most recent local authority post before joining the CYCJ, Ranald led on the implementation of the Whole System Approach, delivering a range of specialist services to young people in conflict with the law. Prior to this, Ranald undertook a two year secondment with the Scottish Government supporting the creation of Community Justice Authorities. Ranald co-chaired the National Youth Justice Advisory Group for over four years, and was involved in a range of national working groups delivering on various aspects of the Whole System Approach.
