The price of prejudice: when attitudes shape policy

As professionals, to what extent do our attitudes and social representations shape how we work with young offenders? Do our ‘hidden prejudices’ get in the way of equal treatment? And is this preventing vital progress from being made?

In the very first CYCJ Associates seminar on April 6th, held jointly with the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR), Max Rutherford (Criminal Justice Programme Manager at Barrow Cadbury Trust) and Dr Fernando Fernandes (Community Learning and Development, University of Dundee) gave thought-provoking and informative presentations on challenging stigma, how a young adult court pilot scheme could help young people ‘grow out of crime’,  and why youth justice interventions should be extended to include young people into their twenties.

Sarah Armstrong, Director of SCCJR, was Chair for this event.
